Photographing with intention | The Face of Childhood

child and family photographer atlanta - katie oblingerJanuary is quiet.  It’s good and bad.  After spending the last few months running on the endless hamster wheel of sessions/edits/sessions/edits/more sessions/more edits, by the time January hits, I’m slap worn out and the world is all too quiet.  Everyone has stepped back to spend time with their families and hunkered down to avoid the cold weather.  In January, most photographers start a personal project in the form of photo challenges.  Some create daily photo projects (the infamous 365), while some start weekly projects (Project 52), and others stick with the monthly photo theme to serve as their “passion project”.  As someone who has pretty much failed all types of photo projects just mentioned, I’m just going to photograph for me.  It’s something I’ve dreamed about for a while.  I’ve had these visions in my head of photographing black and white portraits of kids (especially my own) because time just isn’t going to stand still, no matter how hard I beg.  So I choose to fight back by doing the only thing I know how to do…freeze time with my camera. This isn’t going to be an every day occurrence.  It will happen when it happens and I’ll document and share along the way.  But you can expect a few things:

  1. these images will be real.  no fake smiles.  hopefully, some missing teeth.  if i’m lucky maybe some freckled faces.
  2. they will be in black and white.  because to me, there is nothing more classically timeless than a beautiful black and white portrait.
  3. these images will be of children. to show them as these perfect little beings.  to show them as they are.  right now.

I hope you’ll come along for the ride.
