Holidays are a beautiful thing, for it means spending time with family.  People you don’t get to see every day.  The ones you keep up with over email and the occasional letter, phone call, or text.  The ones that you always wish you’d make more time for. The ones that get you. The ones that when you see them, you pick up right where you left off.  The ones that laugh at your jokes (even if they’re only moderately funny).  And the ones that you love with all your heart.

May we all have the kind of love the Martinez family has.  May we love each other.  Hug each other.  Make fun of each other.  And laugh together.  And then maybe, just maybe, as an added bonus, take a picture together.  Because in 1 year, in 5 years, in 20 years, we should all be able to look back and feel the same crazy happiness that was felt in that moment together.

We can all relate to the fact that we take a bazillion pictures of our kids.  You don’t have to be a photographer to be guilty (thanks to that little camera we carry in our back pockets at all times).  So you know how hard it can be to sit down and go through every single one of them to put together your favorites list.  By this time I typically have an album recapping our year, packaged it up, and gifted it to grandparents.  (We’ll just ignore the fact that I put that on the back burner this year..) But this week I did sit down at my computer and pick out some of my absolute favorites (not quite as intense as Sophie’s Choice), but still a lot to take in.  And I walked away  loving the messy, the silly, the out of focus, the snapshot, the loud, the quiet, and the real.  Or what we call our lives.

Brooke Murphy - Sister and Camden? SWOOOOOON! And I love the reflection in the beach time. LOVE LOVE LOVE. Who am I kidding, I love them all!ReplyCancel

As part of a personal project,  (not quite the same as the one I just wrote about), I set out to meditate on 2016.  With that came looking at every single image I shared with clients for all of 2016. Daunting to some, eye opening to this girl.  When I stepped back I saw images in a new light.  Saw sweeter connections, more touching moments, or even silly little things that all jumped out at me in a way I hadn’t quite taken notice of before.  It made me appreciate the connections families had with one another and I’m most certainly grateful for this “project” as it opened my eyes to a whole new world of emotion.

My takeaway is this:

Moments happen fast.  We feel things even faster.  In a split second, a simple kiss or a look or a touch can take place and most of us will never notice or feel it.  And some of these moments are incredible treasures that I hope each one of these amazing humans will hold on to forever.

Here are some of my favorites from this past year.  I hope you’ll see the same love, beauty, joy, and full on emotion that I have once again fallen in love with….

Here it is…2016 | A Year in Review.

child and family photographer atlanta - katie oblingerJanuary is quiet.  It’s good and bad.  After spending the last few months running on the endless hamster wheel of sessions/edits/sessions/edits/more sessions/more edits, by the time January hits, I’m slap worn out and the world is all too quiet.  Everyone has stepped back to spend time with their families and hunkered down to avoid the cold weather.  In January, most photographers start a personal project in the form of photo challenges.  Some create daily photo projects (the infamous 365), while some start weekly projects (Project 52), and others stick with the monthly photo theme to serve as their “passion project”.  As someone who has pretty much failed all types of photo projects just mentioned, I’m just going to photograph for me.  It’s something I’ve dreamed about for a while.  I’ve had these visions in my head of photographing black and white portraits of kids (especially my own) because time just isn’t going to stand still, no matter how hard I beg.  So I choose to fight back by doing the only thing I know how to do…freeze time with my camera. This isn’t going to be an every day occurrence.  It will happen when it happens and I’ll document and share along the way.  But you can expect a few things:

  1. these images will be real.  no fake smiles.  hopefully, some missing teeth.  if i’m lucky maybe some freckled faces.
  2. they will be in black and white.  because to me, there is nothing more classically timeless than a beautiful black and white portrait.
  3. these images will be of children. to show them as these perfect little beings.  to show them as they are.  right now.

I hope you’ll come along for the ride.

    Dick Slattery - Katie,
You have way with words! Your wring flows as smoothly as your photography. You never cease to amaze. My cousin, the photographer, Dan Walsh would approve of your oeuvre! I damn sure do!!!!

Brooke Murphy - I LOVE THIS SERIES! I think Camden is the bomb anyway, but I love the approach. And selfishly, I’d love to see this as a Camden project-turned-book, but I understand if you venture out with other kids too… but that kid of your’s personality is high-flying and I can’t get enough of him.ReplyCancel

Pam - Katie – love this! These images show so much contrast and texture and B/W is my favorite, too. No fancy outfits just pajamas and a headband – now THAT is a real dress code for childhood! Thank you for this inspiration as we start the year. Now I just need to get photos off of my computer – that is my goal for 2017!ReplyCancel
